Malaysia is a country in south east Asia split into two halves by the South China Sea. The west half is a peninsula on the southern tip of Thailand, while the east half covers the north end of the island of Borneo. The peninsula half is generally more developed than the island half. Both halves display typical tropical weather, with temperatures ranging from 22 degrees C to 31 degrees C. Dry season is May to September while rainy season is November to February.
The capital is Kuala Lumpur and the population is around 27 million. The official language is Bahasa Malaysia although English is fairly widely spoken. The predominant religion is Islam at 60%.
Most of the land is unspoilt with clean beaches along the coast and dense forests inland. The range of wildlife is very wide, including the smallest species of rhino, many species of monkey, leopards and bears.
A lot of the Malaysian culture is influenced by China and India, with some lesser influence from Persia, Arabia and Britain. The cosmopolitan nature of the population assures a certain amount of hospitality and welcome for foreign tourists. The cuisine displays this multicultural diversity very well, sometimes combining the food of one culture with the cooking methods of another. Unlike many Asian countries, the drinking water is relatively safe for British tourists.
Malaysia has more than its share of events and festivals throughout the year. A few choice examples would be the International Pahang River Expedition, the Meyaka River Fiesta, the Borneo Jazz Festival, the Kuala Lumpur Wedding Craft Fair and the annual Malaysia Tourism Awards.
