Koh Samui (sometimes referred to as just "Samui") is an island off the east coast of Thailand, positioned off the narrow Kra Isthmus in the Gulf Of Thailand.
It is about 100 square miles in size with a population of around 50,000, and is surrounded by a cluster of about 60 smaller islets. Unlike most islands of similar size it has its own airport. Several ferry services run between the island and mainland. A bus depot serves most of the island. Taxis are plentiful but they may charge high fares.
The island is largely unspoilt by industry since its economic history has been focused upon produce such as coconuts and fish. Today tourism is Samui's main industry although the IT business is also flourishing since the island became internet connected.
The middle of the island is dominated by Mount Khao Pom which stands 2,000 ft high and is covered in dense jungle. The mountain landscape is much too rugged for road building so a ring road lies around the perimeter for convenience.
Be warned that road traffic on Samui can be notoriously dangerous. The weather on the island is hot and humid like most of Thailand, but the key difference is that the rainy season is particularly short.
Regular events on the island include:
The Buffalo Fighting Festival which is a more humane alternative to bull fighting.
The Ten Stars Samui Art Party which is a celebration of the island's culture in general.
The Fisherman's Village Festival which is a five day celebration of music and food.
The Samui Regetta annual sailing tournament.
