Pattaya is a city situated on the coast at the north end of the Gulf Of Thailand. It lies in the Chonburi Province in the industrialised eastern seaboard and has a population of around 100,000. It is a major seaside resort and the second most visited city in Thailand after Bangkok. The closest serving airport is Suvarnabhumi near Bangkok at 75 miles distance.
The Pattaya Bay area is one of the largest seaside resorts in Asia and is surrounded by small offshore islands easily accessible by a short boat ride. The bay is huge and even from a high vantage point it stretches as far as the eye can see. The area is very highly developed and regularly attracts tourists from the inland as well as around fifteen million foreign visitors a year. Watersport activities such as sailing or waterskiing feature very heavily, and even submarine trips are available. There are also many activities on dry land, such as 21 golf courses in the surrounding area, go-kart racing, art museums and family-orientated amusement parks. Zoological attractions are also numerous, such as the Elephant Village, Sri Racha Tiger Zoo and the Nong Nooch Tropical Botanic Gardens.
Pattaya plays host to a large number of annual festivals, such as the International Bed Race and Chinese New Year in January, Burapa Bike Week in February and the Pattaya International Music Festival in March.
It was during the Vietnam War that Pattaya became a popular rest and recreational destination for US military; until then it had only been a minor fishing town.
