Phuket is an island situated off the south west corner of Thailand, and is the biggest island in its vicinity with an area of about 230 square miles. Its name literally means "hill" because of its largely mountainous appearance. Around 70% of its surface is mountains with the rest being plains. It is connected to the mainland by two bridges and has a few smaller islets scattered around its edge.
Originally its economy was fuelled by tin mining and rubber production but now it depends largely on the tourism industry. The island can boast at least eight major beach resorts with Patong Beach on the west coast being the largest.
Watersports are a very popular activity in Patong Beach and it also has the largest shopping facilities. Although Patong Beach is the most developed and has the most entertainment opportunities, those holidaymakers who wish to avoid congestion and crowds may wish to opt for the quieter resorts such as Karon Beach, Kata Beach or Surin Beach.
Some of Phuket's major landmarks include:
The Two Heroines Monument located in Amphoe Thalang, relating to the repulsion of Burmese invaders in 1785.
The Thalang National Museum also in Amphoe Thalang.
The Khao Phra Wildlife Park dedicated to the preservation of endangered species and virgin forest.
The island is also host to a few regular festivities, such as the Vegetarian Festival in late September, the annual Kata Beach yacht races, the Patong Carnival held every November and the Chao Le Boat Floating Festival.
