Anguilla is a tiny British overseas territory, with is capital called "The Valley".
The island has a very long history as a spiritual focus point, dating back to the time of the Arawak Indians who believed it to have some cosmic significance. Today the quiet and idyllic nature of Anguilla, largely unspoilt by industry, still makes it sought after as a place of spiritual contemplation. There is a very strong Christian presence, with one church for every square mile, but visitors of all denominations are welcomed.
The island has 33 beaches with a total length of 12 miles. The quality and cleanliness of the sand and water are second to none. Visitors to the beaches are well provided for with cafes and bars, yet they are rarely crowded. Most of them offer a view of the many fishing boats on the water as they set about their work.
Sporting activities are generally widespread on Anguilla. The island's traditional sport is boat racing with many events taking place through the spring and summer. It has its origins around 1900 when there was fierce competition between outgoing boats in search of employment and they were forced to race against each other with their livelihoods at stake. Because the islanders found the spectacle exciting, it later became a frequent sporting event.
Other sporting activities include golf, tennis, water-skiing and windsurfing. The islanders are generally very health conscious and there are many fitness clubs scattered about. It should be mentioned that the flat landscape and small size of the island makes cycling the ideal means of travel.
