The British Virgin Islands are a group of British-controlled islands in the Caribbean to the east of Puerto Rico. The four main islands are Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada and Jost Van Dyke. Tortola is by far the largest island, the most populated and the location of the capital Road Town.
The climate on the Virgin Islands is tropical with very little variation through the year. Typical daytime temperatures vary between 24 and 32 degrees C in summer and 21 to 29 degrees C in winter.
The animal life around the islands is very rich and varied. Inland, the forests are packed with lizards, monkeys, hummingbirds and falcons to name but a few. The most interesting sea creatures may well be the humpback whales, which congregate in winter, or perhaps the leatherback turtles, which visit the shores periodically to lay eggs.
With so many beaches it is inevitable that water activities would be a prominent feature. Snorkeling is a major pastime since the clear water is ideal for that purpose. Boat rental firms operate along the beaches and, considering the number of small, uninhabited islets in the vicinity, renting a boat to explore these would seem to be an excellent idea.
