The Cayman Islands are a small British overseas territory in the Caribbean and also the base of a major offshore financial centre, since it has had tax-free status for over 200 years. The capital city is Georgetown.
There are three main islands: Cayman Brac, Grand Cayman and Little Cayman. The Cayman Ridge is a huge underwater ridge rising 8,000 feet from the sea floor and these islands are the three points where it breaks the surface. The climate is generally tropical. Variance in temperature is only slight, averaging 29 degrees C in July and 25 degrees C in January.
On the Cayman Islands all the typical holiday activities can be found, particularly those water-related such as parasailing, jet skiing or snorkeling. Interacting with nature is also a major theme, including such things as swimming with dolphins in captivity, seeing farmed turtles at close quarters, exploring the Queen Elizabeth National Park or swimming with stingrays. The native wildlife includes several species of parrots and macaws, lizards, bats, tree frogs and freshwater crocodiles.
The most interesting island tours might be by submarine or helicopter. More economical options would include horseback tours, hiking tours, birdwatching and cave exploration.
