The island of Dominica is located in the area of the Caribbean, known as the Lesser Antilles and has been nicknamed “The Nature Island” because of its unspoilt environment and natural attractions. The official language on the island, a former British colony, is English, while the currency is the East Caribbean Dollar, though many tourist venues will also accept US Dollars. There are few towns on the island of Dominica, whose volcanic hills are home to extensive areas of rainforest, but the capital Roseau on the south-east coast is where cruise ships dock and Portsmouth, in the north, is close to the island's main airport. Flights to Dominica arrive from Caribbean hubs like Antigua and Martinique – there are no direct flights to the island from either the US or Europe.
Dominica is home to dozens of stunning beaches, ideal for relaxing in the year-round sunshine or for more energetic pursuits, such as sailing, scuba diving and snorkelling. As well as the unusual marine species and interesting underwater features that can be found throughout the Caribbean, the waters of Dominica are also home to some unique sights created by volcanic activity under the sea; sights such as hot water vents and walls of bubbles that you can swim through. If you prefer to stay on the surface of the water you can take a boat trip around the coast of Dominica, which at certain times of the year is an ideal spot for whale watching. Sea kayaking is also a popular activity in the sheltered waters in this part of the Caribbean.
As well as the beaches and fascinating marine life, Dominica is also home to beautiful natural scenery away from the coast. There are several ways to explore the island's rainforest, such as walking tours, Jeep trips or more exciting methods, like canyoning and zip lining. A more sedate way to see the rainforest from above the impressive canopy is via an aerial tram or cable car. Keep your eyes peeled for the many species of birds and even monkeys that live on Dominica. The Morne Trois Pitons National Park isn't just home to rainforest, however, as there are several volcanic springs, lakes, waterfalls and other natural features formed by the region's unique geology.
Experienced walkers will want to make the eight-mile hike to the spectacular 'Boiling Lake', a huge body of water that bubbles with volcanic heat and is constantly shrouded in steam. There are many locals who will be happy to act as your guide, not only to make sure you don't get lost en route, but also to point out places of interest on the climb.
