Margarita is an island situated in the Caribbean off the north coast of Venezuela. Together with its two smaller neighboring islets, Coche and Cubagua, the three of them make up the state of Nueva Esparta.
The climate is tropical with mainly warm and dry weather, and rainfall is generally very low all year round. Average temperatures tend to stay around 30 degrees C in summer and 25 degrees C in winter.
Many activities on Margarita are centred on the beaches. Surfing is a very popular pastime all around the coast due to the size and strength of the incoming waves. Cruising around on a chartered vessel is also a pleasant means of getting about. The waters are reported to have very good fishing opportunities at any time of year, and are also perfectly suited for scuba diving and snorkeling.
There are plenty of activities to be found inland too. Shops, casinos and bingo halls are plentiful, and the island's interior can be explored by jeep, cycling or horseback tours. Wildlife on Margarita Island is varied and plentiful, including ocelots, skunks, deer and 158 species of birds.
