Part of the US Virgin Islands, along with St Thomas, St John and Water Island, St Croix is the largest of the four, at just 45 kilometres long and 11 kilometres wide! Home to a mixture of ethnic groups, English is the most common language and the currency is the US dollar. Home to several protected marine and onshore nature areas, the island has always been popular with divers, but has only really become a resort destination in the last twenty years. You can fly to St Croix from several mainland US cities, as well as San Juan airport in Puerto Rico.
As with many of holiday destinations in the Caribbean, it is the ocean and the beaches that are the main attractions. Whether you are wanting to just lie back and relax or looking to take part in some more exciting activities, St Croix will have something to make your holiday perfect. Buck Island, just north of St Croix itself, is home to an impressive preserved area of reefs. Boat trips run frequently from the main town of Christiansted to Buck Island, where you can dive, snorkel or just enjoy the scenery on the beautiful white sandy beaches. Some of the beaches, such as the Buccaneer and Chenay Bay belong to resorts, but members of the public can use them, either for a small fee or for free if they buy food and drink from the bar. Several beaches offer jet ski rentals, or you can always spend the day at a more relaxing pace by taking a trip on a sailing boat. Local companies either offer private rentals or day trips for groups from the resorts.
The St Croix Heritage Trail is the best way to explore the island's culture and history, taking in most of the significant sites. The 72-mile route calls at the well preserved Fort Frederik, museums, gardens and the Cruzan rum factory, where for a small fee you can take a tour and sample the local produce. The island hosts several festivals throughout the year, especially in the summer. Both Christiansted and Frederiksted, the two main towns on the island, have summer music events, with live performances on the promenade, while there is always a lively parade during Mardi Gras. The main cultural event is the “Crucian Christmas Festival”, which takes place throughout December and into January. The festival features a temporary carnival, parades, music, dance and sporting contests and lots of local food specialities!
