Belize is part of the narrow strip of land connecting North and South America, also known as Central America. It is actually the most northerly country in Central America and is home to dozens of popular beaches that have, as yet, remained unspoilt by too many tourists. The country's natural environment is one of its major attractions, with travellers and backpackers exploring remote jungle areas on foot or by kayak. The official language is English and though the official currency is the Belize dollar, US dollar is also widely accepted, particularly in tourist areas and by companies involved in the tourist industry.
One of the most popular attractions throughout Central America, and Belize is no exception, is the chance to visit an ancient Mayan village. Xunantunich can be reached by a ferry from the pretty village of San Jose Succotz. Not only are the ruins particularly impressive at this site, but the view from the top along the length of the village is stunning. Closer to Belize City is the settlement of Altun Ha, not only home to Mayan buildings and carvings, but also dozens of local species of wildlife. Caracol is a little more difficult to reach, and you will either need a car or to join an organised trip for the day, but the final destination and the beautiful scenery on the drive make the journey worthwhile. Home to the largest Mayan pyramid in Belize, at an impressive 140 feet tall, Caracol is located at the western edge of the Maya Mountains.
Once you've spent a few days exploring Mayan ruins or trekking through the jungle, you will probably want to rest and relax, and there are plenty of places for visitors to do this in Belize. Although the country is one of the smallest in Central America, there are still plenty of beaches to visit, ranging from those that have remained practically untouched in the last few decades, to those which have a blossoming tourist industry. Most of the country's 270 miles of coastline is protected by an offshore reef. This has the double impact of making the waters calm for swimming and providing a great area for diving and snorkelling. Some of the best beaches are to be found in Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker and Placencia, while the coastal town of Dangriga may have few tourist facilities, but it is where many locals head in the summer for parties and to hear local musicians.
