Bansko is a ski resort town situated in the South West of Bulgaria, three thousand feet above sea level at the foot of the Pirin Mountains. It is well known as a high profile venue for skiing competitions and, more recently, music festivals. The combination of lofty mountains, lakes and forests provides very picturesque views. The town can also boast ancient ruins dating back as far as 100 BC.
It can be safely said that Bansko is Bulgaria's number one ski resort. In recent years the level of investment in new skiing facilities to cater for all levels of expertise has been nothing short of overwhelming. The growing flocks of tourists make expansion a constant necessity. At present there exists 47 miles of ski runs served by 27 lifts and drags; not to mention one particularly large and impressive gondola. The two main ski centres are Chalin Valog for the lower slopes and Shiligarnika for the higher slopes. Not only a magnet for pleasure seeking tourists, the town plays host to major competitions such as the World Cup Alpine Ski Races.
After the day's skiing is done, Bansko provides much nightlife and entertainment. Cafes and bars are open well into the night, offering traditional Bulgarian wine and folk music among other things. The annual Bansko Jazz Festival ensures that the musical scene is both rich and varied.
