Established in 1896 and previously known as Chamkoria until the mid-20th century, Borovets is a mountain resort in the Sofia Province of Bulgaria set 3,000 ft above sea level amid protected pine forests. It is the oldest ski resort in Bulgaria and the main departure point for Mount Mousala, the highest peak in the Balkans. The nearest neighbouring town is Samokov at six miles distance.
Around forty miles of pistes converge conveniently close to the centre. Nineteen seperate tracks of varying difficulty cater for all levels of experience and an array of twelve different lifts are provided, including one rather impressive gondola covering a distance of three miles and an elevation of 3,000 ft.
The official total capacity of all lifts is 8150 people per hour with the gondola alone accounting for 1,200 of those people.
Other winter sport activities include ski instruction, skidoo hire and ski jumping. On Wednesdays the regular ski jumping show provides free entertainment for all. Although the focus of the activity is heavily based on skiing, even the quieter summer period provides certain other distractions such as hiking, swimming and historical tours.
