Nessebar, formerly known as Mesembria, is an ancient seaside resort town on the coast of the Black Sea in Northern Bulgaria. The nearest major city is Burgas, around 25 miles away. It is not only one of the most popular seaside resorts in Bulgaria, but quite possibly the one with the longest and richest history, dating back as far as the 6th century BC. It has the appearance of a peninsula, but in reality it is an island connected to the mainland by a manmade isthmus equipped with a road and promenade. Because of its strategical position on the edge of a threatened empire it has been occupied and reoccupied many times over the centuries and bears the hallmarks of different cultures on account of this. The variety of historic buildings earned the town a place in the list of World Heritage Sites in 1983. At least twelve famous churches can be found in the vicinity dating back as far as the 6th century AD. Even many modern buildings are styled to imitate the ancient architecture.
Shops, bars and cafes are plentiful. Transportation can be a very idyllic and pleasant experience, including open topped train services and even boat rides. Having said that, the peninsula is small enough to be explored on foot.
