Rila is a mountain range in South West Bulgaria. The highest peak is Musala at around 9,000 feet which makes Rila the highest mountain range in the Balkans. The word "Rila" literally means "well-watered" in reference to the abundance of lakes and streams in the area. Most of the range is contained within the Rila National Park. As a holiday resort it will undoubtably appeal to the keen outdoorsman above all else. Sun-seekers would be advised to holiday elsewhere, since the average temperatures to be expected are lower that those in England.
Wildlife and natural beauty are the main features of Rila. The list of wild animals to be found is very extensive, including wolves, bears, otters, badgers, deer, wildcats, wild boars and mountain goats. Huge expanses of wilderness, broad horizons and fresh air will provide more opportunity for exploring than could ever be covered in one visit.
There is only one significant landmark in the region and that is the Rila Monastery, which is considered one of the most important historic buildings in Bulgaria. It dates back to the 10th century AD and is famous enough to be featured on Bulgarian currency.
