Varna is the largest city on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast with a population of about 330,000 and also a popular seaside holiday resort. It is the administrative centre of the Varna Municipality, the seat of the Black Sea Euro-Region and headquarters of the Bulgarian Navy. The city sits upon Lake Varna and is pleasantly surrounded by vineyards, orchards and woodland. There is about 12 miles of beach in total, most of which is comprised by Varna Bay. The sand and water both display high standards of cleanliness and the sea is not inhabited by any dangerous wildlife. The bay area is kept clear of any industrial sites or factories which might otherwise spoil the view. Most buildings surrounding the bay are picturesque and face the water in a gentle curve. The weather is slightly cooler than that of the Mediterranean, but in the summer it is still ideal weather for tourists. Generally ten hours a day of sunshine can be expected. Landmarks include: The Varna Cathedral which offers a splendid view of the city from its high belltower. The Festival And Congress Centre which is crammed with cafes and bars surrounding its spacious 1,000 seater auditorium. The Varna Dolphinarium which is the only one in the Balkan Peninsula. The Palace Of Culture And Sports with its ten halls of various sizes providing a venue for all manner of sporting events. The Roman Baths which bear testament to the age of the city. Varna is basically a rich combination of historic interest and modern convenience. The ancient history of the city provides so much exploration it may be difficult to see everything in one visit.
