Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean and is of interest to Turkey and Greece who occupy different parts of the island. The capital and largest city is Nicosia and both cultures are visually represented by walking the green line, which divides the two cultures. The architecture in the capital derives from as early as the 13th century with some of the most magnificent examples being that of the Venetian Walls and Column erected to keep out the Ottomans as they rampaged through the city. The Walls did not succeed but it did leave us with the Ottoman legacy left behind.
The beaches and coastline of Cyprus offer a range of scenic sights parading around the blue sea of the Mediterranean. From the divine sands of the mythical birthplace of Aphrodite in Paphos, the sedate sea of the Larnaca lapped sands, the mountains cascading to the shores of Polis and the wind gathering coast of Limassol ideal for surfers and those bathers who prefer cooling breezes and last but not least the very popular resort of Ayia Napa. There are numerous Blue Flag beaches – the estimable European award for clean and environmentally friendly beaches.
There are many activities in the capital for the sightseer and those coastal-bound can also take part in water sports such as water skiing, jet skiing, windsurfing and even rubber vessels for the young and playful. Or you can opt to cruise the island in a chartered yacht or those that offer regular excursions. The mountains offer the chance to paraglide to the waiting beaches and in Ayia Napa get a bird’s eye view before succumbing to a bungee rope as you descend. Eating and dining can be done in the local restaurants and tavernas, which offer snacks and drinks to soothe the summer warmth.
