At the head of the River Severn lying south-west to the centre of England is the county of Gloucestershire. It is a county endowed with generous views of the undulating limestone hills of the Cotswolds, the fertile valley of the River Severn and the arboreal realm of the Forest of Dean. Its population is relatively small and the cathedral city of Gloucester itself only retains its highest density of residents by mere thousands to Cheltenham – a close second.
Gloucester Cathedral originally started as an Anglo-Saxon abbey in the 7th century with its restoration being cared for by a monk shortly after William I defeated Harold. A few centuries later Henry III was crowned and was also the final resting place for Edward II who was murdered in nearby Berkeley Castle, which is accessible to the public during the summer. The history of Edward II is famous more for the reason for his death. His life caused much political instability due not only to his inability to follow in his father’s footsteps in military competence but also because he was more interested in intellectual pursuits and honouring a male friend that he knighted which caused political turmoil.
