Greater Manchester is one of the largest metropolitan counties located in the Northwest of England. It is the first for many things including: the first railway station in the world; the first industrialised city and two premier league football teams: Manchester City and Manchester United. The latter having recently achieved the accolade for having won the most English Premier League titles.
The city is inspired with decades of music having born some of the bands during the ‘Madchester’ period of the ‘80s with groups like ‘The Stone Roses’, ‘Happy Mondays’ and the famous Hacienda nightclub owned by Tony Wilson and New Order. Records of this history are recorded at the Museum of Science and Industry. Manchester is still a hive of activity and is very popular for shoppers during the day and revellers during the evening.
The Museum of Science and Industry also profiles the great textile industry of ‘Cottonopolis’ which is another moniker given to the city of Manchester for its prolific textiles industry during the 19th century, which was once the centre of international trade. During that same period the levies imposed by Liverpool on their docks and the railway cargos of cotton imports and exports forced Manchester to look for an alternative way to bring their goods through and so crafted the proposal of the Manchester Ship Canal. It follows the route of the rivers Mersey and Irwell and is also venerated historically at the museum too.
Besides this significant history and their many firsts, there are other museums and theatres including community farms, riding centres and golf as the urban areas give way to more rural settings. For the younger ones there are also adventure facilities including the Legoland Discovery Centre as well as many throughout the great area of Greater Manchester.
