Hertfordshire was originally the area assigned to a fortress constructed at Hertford under the rule of Edward the Elder – whose son Alfred the Great is credited in beating back the Vikings leaving a swathe of the South of England free of the unwanted barbarians. Its history also pre-dates this Saxon period of rule to the Neolithic Period.
The most prolific towns with the main attractions and interests in Hertfordshire are those of St Albans, Ware and Tring. The town of St Albans was named after the first British person who followed in the footsteps of St Stephen by being martyred. This is documented in the historic spires of St Albans – Church of England Cathedral. Another history of another kind to those who are military minded is the Mosquito Aircraft Museum – the fighter aircraft dubbed ‘The Wooden Wonder’ that helped the British to stave off the German raids during the Second World War. The Museum of St Albans also helps to retell the history of Hertfordshire’s significance.
The beauty of Herefordshire is wonderfully told through the natural visual aspects of the nature reserves in Ware – Rye Meads Nature Reserve; and that of the one in Tring – the College Lake Nature Reserve. The reserve in Ware is an extensive wetland area that attracts marsh and lagoon habitat mammals as well as many species of bird that lures nature and animal lovers as well as birdwatchers. The latter is a reserve built upon a chalk quarry that offers a panoramic view of lakes and meadows. Ware also offers great walks alongside the River Lea that amble into placid settings of trees shadowing patient anglers. Tring also records the county’s pride in its own Natural History Museum.
History and Nature combine to offer this county a richness which attracts many visitors each year and naturally this also provides great settings for golf with wonderful backdrops.
