The Isle of Wight is the largest island of England and has been its own county since its separation from Hampshire near the end of the nineteenth century. It is the birthplace of the famous poet Alfred Lord Tennyson and the longest reigning monarch of Queen Victoria retired here after having used her home Osborne House as a summer getaway.
There are parks dedicated to animals: rare, exotic and domestic such as the Isle of Wight Zoo and Amazon World Zoo Park; Flamingo Park including many animal farms, the Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary and the Owl and Monkey Haven. The Isle of Wight Coastal Footpath winds along the coast through natural trails of flora in season and land to sea bordering golden beaches, bays and coves offering many water sport facilities as well as the prestigious sailing events that take place in Cowes which runs an annual regatta and has also been host to the America’s Cup. There are also a range of sporting activities such as hiking, riding and cycling. The latter also being hosted at Brighstone Forest – a forested area that offers arboreal delights of its own. Tree climbing is also a sport that is popular on the island.
Besides Osborne House, Queen Victoria’s old residence Osborne House: there are also other buildings such as Brading Roman Villa and Carisbrooke Castle as well as many museums and St Catherine’s Lighthouse that light up the past. Other historic relevance of an even older kind presents itself in the form of Dinosaur Isle and also excellent for the children and young hearts is the Robin Hill Adventure Park. There are also the Paddle Steamer Monarch and the Isle of Wight Steam Railway that will give you visually a sea to earth view and vice versa – an earth to sea view of this momentous island.
