Kent is one of the home counties of London and it is the only county of England to nominally share a border with France through the joint collaboration of the Channel Tunnel. Its county town of Maidstone is often referred to as the Garden of England. The Bronze and Iron Ages and the timeline hurrying through to the Roman occupation are represented too. Lullingstone Roman Villa in Eynsford is a fine example of the ancient civilisation’s dominance. Canterbury has a beautiful cathedral with the city also remarkably foretold in Chaucer’s Canterbury tales. Then we come to the fortifications of Dover Castle and Leeds Castle in Maidstone and others as well as museums that visually record Britain’s past.
Kent has a generous coastline with beautiful sanded beaches and enjoys some of the best weather in Britain offering a large selection of water sports as well as the relaxing pastime of sunbathing during the peak season. It also has four of the Cinque Ports that were set up for trade and commercial purposes. These ports of New Romney, Hythe, and Sandwich all have their own delightful characters including that of Dover with its white cliffs created from shorn weathered chalk. The British Navy port of Chatham is also significant due to the many that were built, some of which are housed at the Historic Chatham Dockyard.
