Lancashire emerged from one of the most famous noble houses of England’s historic past – the town of Lancaster. During the 15th century, one of the most famous civil wars raged with the other noble house of York during the Plantagenet reign for thirty years. It ended in a marriage between the Lancastrian Henry Tudor and Elizabeth of York who both took the throne and henceforth started the Tudor reign, which lasted for 117 years.
Besides history the county also has an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty known as the Forest of Bowland adorned with heather and bogland and rife with flora and fauna frequented by grouse hunters, cyclists and ramblers. Also part of the estimable and preserved national park of the Lake District falls within this historic and naturally endowed region.
Lancaster may be the historic beginning but for recreation such as theme parks and beaches – Blackpool excels. It enjoys a generous coastline of beaches, which are the most visited in the North of England. Besides the revelry of the sun during the peak season there are also plenty of water sports such as sailing, scuba diving, snorkelling, windsurfing and kayaking. Amusement parks such as Sandcastle Waterpark, Blackpool Pier and Pleasure Beach and there is also the zoo. The beacon of Blackpool Tower imitated from the design of the Eiffel Tower in the capital of France and its illuminations light the night sky offering the chance to kick off the shoes and dance through to the early hours of the morning at some of the most famous evening entertainments.
For those who would prefer a drier sport in the surroundings of the Lancastrian countryside there are many golf courses including the Royal Lytham and St Anne’s Golf Course which has hosted the British Open three times.
