Merseyside is a county with Liverpool at its hub. During the 18th century this city exceeded the wealth of the capital London and some magnificent buildings from its golden merchant period look spectacular especially when returning from a ferry excursion around the peninsular taking in Birkenhead and Seacombe on the River Mersey.
It is a city that has two cathedrals that supports the two religious poles of Christianity – The Anglican Cathedral that supports the protestant faith and the Metropolitan Cathedral – the Roman Catholic faith. Both of these cathedrals have most of their buildings open to the public from 10 – 4pm every day.
It is also famous for its music scene with the most well known musicians being that of The Beatles which is recollected through The Beatles Story and the homes of John Lennon and Paul McCartney whose childhood homes are available for visiting. So is The Cavern where The Beatles did many of their gigs. The English Sculptor Antony Gormley who designed the Angel of the North also created a centrepiece on Crosby Beach called Another Place, which exists of one hundred cast iron figures looking out to sea. The Walker Art Gallery is one of seven national museums of Liverpool recording times of days gone by with wonderful exhibits of art, sculpture and relics related to military, industry, recreation and oddities such as the British Lawnmower Museum.
Recreation in Liverpool comes in many forms with two premier league football clubs Liverpool and Everton. It has high wire facilities in Knowsley called the Aerial Extreme which has over sixty adrenalin-urged obstacles that are designed from the age of six onwards through to the more adult-oriented. This runs alongside Knowsley Safari Park – a wonderful drive through wildcat, monkey and other exotic wild animal territories.
