Rockingham Castle was built during the reign of William the Conqueror (1066 – 1087). This once favoured castle of former royals fell out of favour and until its purchase in the 15th century had been in disrepair. Nowadays due to the constant attention of the family of the former noble that have lived here for over four hundred years it has been wonderfully restored. The Gardens and House are open to the public on Tuesdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays during the peak season. It is also open mid-April to the end of May barring Tuesdays. Their private ownership also invites functions and private ceremonies such as weddings.
Another famous castle is Fotheringhay Castle that was once a Norman stone motte and bailey fortress. It was the birthplace of King Richard III in 1452 and the trial and execution of Mary, Queen of Scots. This once famous construction, the site of significant heritage, now lies in ruins, which can still be seen in its devastated state clearly during daylight hours. A footpath leads to it. Another place to visit is Althorp House. Its house and wonderfully landscaped gardens strike a chord with its natural surroundings and the Italian inspired stables that proudly display some cannons recovered from the Battle of Navarino in 1827.
Northamptonshire also shares the home of the British Grand Prix racing circuit with its county neighbour of Buckinghamshire.
