Nottinghamshire is a county associated with the legend of Robin Hood. Sherwood Forest is the backdrop for this famous maverick and his merry men, Maid Marian and Friar Tuck. The forest runs over 450 acres and is clothed with over nine hundred oaks. One of these oaks called the Major Oak is estimated to have lived through eight centuries and is carefully preserved. The forest itself is now a nature reserve and receives just under half a million years visitors per year. It is open every day and access is free though there is a nominal charge for car parking.
Nottingham Castle reputedly the scene of some legendary battles between Robin Hood and the Sheriff of Nottingham. It is now open to the public throughout the week barring Mondays. It also operates Robin Hood Town tours and is open a little bit longer during the spring/summer season.
A famous attraction of poetic heritage is that of the ancestral home of Lord Byron – Newstead Abbey, which originates from the Norman period. It was sold to Byron’s father during the dissolution of the monasteries. It has since then passed to other owners until it was gifted to the city of Nottingham. It is available to visitors from Friday through to Monday.
Another legend to Nottingham is that of the football manager Brian Clough who helped gain much success for Nottingham Forest - a football team which is now in the Championship league. Another sport success is that of cricket – a first class cricket eleven who play at Trent Bridge in West Bridgford. Golf is also enjoyed throughout the county and those who prefer more adrenalin seeking entertainment then Adrenalin Jungle and activities such as karting and quad riding is available.
