Oxfordshire is a quaint county filled with rural farms, homes “out in the sticks”, pretty villages, bustling cities and many attractions. The county town of Oxford houses the second longest surviving university in the world after Bologna in Italy.
The University of Oxford was founded in 1096 and is comprised of 38 colleges and six educational institutions. Many of these colleges such as the ever popular Christchurch are available for tourists and it is strongly recommended to buy a guide on arrival for opening times and charges.
There are also open top buses that will take you leisurely around the city and its major sights. There are also official walking tours organised on a daily basis by the Guild of Guides. Their office is located in the Tourist Information Centre in Gloucester Green which is in the heart of the city.
Many of the sights within Oxford charge but there are some exceptions such as the Ashmolean Museum of Art and Technology and the Oxford University Museum of Natural History which runs alongside another free place to visit – the Pitt Rivers Museum. The two oldest churches in Oxford St Michael at the North Gate and the University Church of St Mary the Virgin are also free but they do charge to climb the towers. The Oxford Botanic Gardens and the Museum of Modern Art also have free visiting times.
There are also nominal charges for other sightseeing attractions and those that are more expensive can often be reduced by buying discount tickets. Check for the latest discounts at the Tourist Information Centre.
For those who would like to see more of rural Oxfordshire there are riding stables, cycles to hire and plenty of excellent hiking trails. There are also many golf clubs that offer very pleasant and challenging courses in natural ambient surroundings.
