Shropshire is an idyllic county set in stunning surroundings with over a quarter of it actually designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It borders the country of Wales with undulating hills, pine forests and valleys running alongside the coursing River Severn – the longest river in England.
In stark contrast it also has its significant industrial past wonderfully demonstrated by the Victorian town of Ironbridge. Nowadays, its industrial blemishes have been suppurated and the once natural beauty of this Gorge has been reclaimed. Many parks, gardens and animal farms now flower the landscape and these are open for visitors throughout the year. However, the industrial past has been carefully recorded and are told throughout the Ironbridge Gorge Museums that all tell their own tales.
Shropshire’s past has also amassed over two dozen hill forts and thirty-two castles. The most visited are those of Ludlow Castle, Stokesay, Whittingham and Clun. They can be visited on a daily basis throughout the spring/summer season barring maintenance and special occasions. Shropshire’s past also draws more significance from its great names such as: the poetry of the famous war poet Wilfred Owen who died a week before Armistice Day; Robert “Clive of India” famous for expanding the British Empire; and Charles Darwin – the eminent naturalist that proposed that all species of life have common ancestry.
There are also plenty of pleasure activities relating to outdoor events such as laser tag and paintball, climbing and abseiling, rifle and archery as well as other activities at The Old Vicarage Outdoor Centre. They and others also organise canoeing and kayaking. There are also cycling and walking holidays or you could tour this marvellous county via their scenic railroads. There is also ample opportunity for riding and the natural landscape has created great backdrops for challenging and creative golf courses.
