Somerset is a lavish county abundant with the Mendip and Quantock hills and the major part of Exmoor National Park. It also has large swathes of moors and coastal area called the Somerset Levels.
A truly delightful area for a wonderful day is the Cheddar Caves and Gorge, so called after the village of Cheddar, which also lends its name to one of the most globally recognised cheeses. This attraction offers a host of activities including caving and climbing or more sedate and natural with their organised nature and conservation walks. Or you can learn about their history in guided tours and during peak season on dry weather days there is an open top tour bus that can wind around the shorn gorge face.
History is also well represented in the historic city of Bath. The Roman Baths and Museum is one of the most intact vestiges of that empirical period. It is still used today and to enjoy the natural spa, the museum, the pump room will require an early start and a full day. This is the same water that the Romans over two millennia ago enjoyed.
The Somerset coast hosts several beaches with their own distinctive personality and facilities. Berrow beach is great for scenic walks, horse riding and kitesurfing. Clevedon and Warren Bay beaches are ideal for the young who like rock pool fishing. Minehead and Burnham-on-Sea are excellent for bathing, swimming and have excellent entertainment, restaurants and other amusements.
