The county of South Yorkshire is an area of past industrial history with the city of Sheffield forming the hub of many activities around the area. The county has several castles and one of the most visited is Conisbrough Castle in the Doncaster area. It claims to have one of the best circular towers, which was constructed by the Plantagenet period of Norman history in the 12th century. It is open throughout the year barring maintenance, the Christmas period and the New Year.
Sheffield also has a cathedral whose origin stretches to over a thousand years old. It is the oldest building in the city and is open every day throughout the year. There are many museums that record its past including those relating to science, industrial and specialist. Just outside the city there is a wonderful exhibit of fluttering butterflies, exotic wildlife and soaring birds of prey housed at the famous Tropical Butterfly House, Wildlife and Falconry Centre.
There are also other fun activities such as the Aerial Extreme in Sheffield that is a challenging rope course set high above the ground. For skiing and snowboarding there is Ski Village that also hosts a tenpin bowling alley and laser tag. There is also the chance to go paintballing too at the Danger Zone Paintball Centre. Rugby is represented strongly with the Eagles and the Tigers and there are also three football teams.
For more sedate activity there are hiking trails in the many parks within the county. One of the most natural place to visit is that the Yorkshire Wildlife Park in Doncaster and Rother Valley Country Park which is a sprawling parkland of 750 acres of water expanse, woodland with idyllic footpaths, bridleways and cycle routes. The park also attracts wild birds and other animals that enjoy the sanctuary of this area.
