Surrey is one of the most wooded and affluent counties in the South of England. The city of Guildford is its historic county town and is the largest in this area. The North Downs is a chalk ridge that runs from Surrey to the White Cliffs of Dover on the Kent Coast. It is interspersed by the rivers Mole and Wey which subsequently empty into the River Thames. The trail follows an old pilgrimage route and is popular for hikers, horse riders and naturalists. Horse riding in Surrey is very popular with many stables used for breeding for horse racing and for general hire. The natural countryside also gives way to challenging and creative golf courses including the famous Wentworth Club in Virginia Waters. The county is also home to one of the earliest instances of the game of cricket now a national favourite of Britain.
