Warwickshire is a beautiful county coloured with the penned works of Shakespeare from Stratford-upon–Avon and George Eliot from Nuneaton. Historic sites such as Charlecote Park landscaped by the famous Lancelot “Capability” Brown and featured in many of Eliot’s novels. The approach to this county is well signed with reference to Shakespeare and aspects of his life are featured in Shakespeare’s Birthplace, his spouse’s cottage that belonging to Anne Hathaway, the house of his mother’s childhood – Mary Arden’s House, Hall’s Croft, Nash’s House and New Place. Another famous writer to come from Coventry is that of Rupert Brook – a war poet of works such as ‘The Soldier’ whose selected words are etched into ‘The Gunner’s Dream’ contained on The Final Cut by Pink Floyd.
The county town is Warwick and this is where eleven centuries ago the daughter of Alfred the Great ordered fortifications to be built. It is open throughout the year barring Christmas Day and also features a children’s favourite with a dragon tower based on the BBC Merlin series. Another great historical site is that of Coventry Cathedral, which is almost a millennia old from its humble beginnings as a Benedictine community founded by Leofric and his wife Lady Godiva. The Cathedral is open daily and a statue of the famous Lady Godiva who strode through the streets of Coventry naked also centrepieces this lovely Warwickshire town.
There are over 1700 footpaths in Warwickshire, some of which travel through the Forest of Arden, some of which travel alongside the water of River Avon and its tributary that flows into the River Avon Canal. There are also golf clubs that pay tribute to the wonder of Warwickshire with its creative and challenging courses. For the car enthusiast there is the Coventry Transport Museum that pays tribute to the methods of transport over the years that have progressed from cycles through to horse drawn carriages and finally to the motor car.
