The West Midlands County contains the second largest city in England after London. Birmingham is in the heart of England and attracts many visitors to its shops, nightclubs and entertainment scene. It has birthed and given rise to famous bands such as Moody Blues, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath and two of the members of Led Zeppelin are brummies – the colloquial name of those who reside here. It has also fostered two of the funniest men in England with Tony Hancock – a legend that started in radio in the 50’s and progressed to the television. Then later, the acerbic wit of Jasper Carrott and his ability to improvise and his constant taunting of his favourite football club Birmingham City Football Club. There is another famous football club in Birmingham called Aston Villa with many fans enjoying the rivalry at home derbies. And let’s not forget Cadbury’s World for the adoring chocoholic.
The city also has a cathedral built in baroque style, which is open to visitors on a daily basis throughout the year. Wolverhampton also has some fascinating attractions such as Wightwick Manor and Gardens. This is a house style during the Arts and Crafts movement with beautiful interior designs by William Morris heavily influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites. Moseley Old Hall is another great historic site in Wolverhampton where Charles II stayed to avoid the armies of Oliver Cromwell during the puritanical upheaval in the 17th century. On a lighter note and a very interesting place to take the young ones too is Wickid Pets, which has monkeys, meerkats, genets, storks and alpacas. This centre encourages petting and feeding of the animals if children want to.
There are many exciting places to visit in West Midlands such as museums chronicling the history of the West Midlands as well as country parks, other gardens, aquariums and other attractions such as paintballing and karting.
