Located in the south-west of France, in the Aquitaine region on the Atlantic coast, the region known as Adour Landes Oceanes has always been a popular destination for tourists, thanks to its mixture of great beaches, natural beauty and picturesque historical towns. Although dominated by its Atlantic coast, where most visitors find themselves staying, there are plenty of interesting places inland, off the beaten track, and the region's network of hiking and cycle trails makes it easy to explore, even if you don't have access to a car. The weather in the summer can get very hot, and the beaches can get very busy on weekends, but there are enough quieter stretches of sand outside the resorts if you are looking for some peace and quiet.
Capbreton is one of the charming seaside towns which attract visitors to the Adour Landes Oceanes region. The promenade is the heart of the town, where locals and visitors alike take their evening stroll, before enjoying dinner in one of the many excellent seafood restaurants. You could always buy your own food from the daily fish market. The beach at Capbreton is divided by a wide canal from the Hossegor Lake and the town's port, although there is a small ferry in the summer that takes you across, rather than following the longer footpath. The Hossegor Lake itself has several beaches and is very popular for swimming in the summer months. You can also try sailing in the calmer waters, while there is a play area and mini golf on dry land to keep children entertained.
Head inland to see a different side to the region, where the lush green countryside is dotted with typical French villages, historic churches and even Roman ruins. The town of Dax, the largest in Adour Landes Oceanes, is home to Roman ruins and was one of the first spa towns in France. Visitors can still take advantage of the spa waters, though the facilities are modern and luxurious these days! As with many towns in the south-west of France, bullfighting is still a popular pastime, and Dax is home to a large bullring where you can attend cultural events and festivals. The nearby village of St Vincent de Paul is a major religious centre and is home to two impressively large churches, including the chapel that now marks the birthplace of the local saint who gave the village its name.
