The Meridionale is the name given to the southernmost area of the Ardeche, a region of central France famous for its stunning scenery, unusual natural phenomena and picturesque hilltop villages. Named after the Ardeche river that flows through this part of the country, many people who enjoy outdoor activities choose to spend their holiday here ; particularly if you enjoy more extreme water sports such as kayaking and white water rafting. The Ardeche can be a fast-flowing river in spring, while in summer the current is a little calmer, meaning even beginners can try their hand at canoeing down parts of its length – a great way to enjoy the scenery.
There are several pretty villages in the Ardeche Meridionale region, most with great views over the surrounding countryside. Balazuc is perched high on a rocky cliff above the Ardeche, though you actually walk down to the main square and older parts of the village as the road winds its way around the hill tops. Home to a fortified church and narrow streets that seem more like a maze, there is plenty here to keep even children occupied for a short visit. Based around a large open square, unlike many of the other Ardeche villages with their claustrophobic feel, Labeaume has plenty of tourist amenities and is a good place to stop for lunch if you are on a day trip around some of the smaller communities. Take the trail out of the village, past the 14th century church, which takes you above the village to an amazing viewpoint. Head in the other direction, down the hill, and the village even has its own river beach, popular with the locals on weekends, but you could easily have it to yourself during the week.
The stunning scenery in the Ardeche Meridionale, easy to explore on foot, bicycle or even by more unusual methods, such as horseback or canoe, is undoubtedly the region's main attraction. Home to one of the most recognisable natural phenomena in the whole coutry, the huge arch at Vallon Pont D'Arc, as well as caves, gorges, valleys and mountains, visitors are spoiled for choice. You can climb to the top of Vallon Pont D'Arc to enjoy the view or swim underneath the archway to get an idea of its immense size, while there are several unusual caves or grottes that even children will enjoy exploring. The caves at St-Marcel d'Ardeche are open to the public in the summer, featuring deep pools of water and rock formations, all cleverly lit, while the experts have found thousands of fossils in L’Aven Grotte de la Forestiére. This cave got its name from the tree roots that have emerged through the cave roof as they grew down looking for water.
