The Cote d'Argent, or Silver Coast, is located in the Aquitaine region of southwest France on the Atlantic coast. As the name might suggest, the majority of this area's attractions are on the coast, which is home to spectacular scenery, popular beaches and picturesque seaside towns and villages. Most visitors to this region spend most of their time by the sea, but there is more than enough to tempt tourists inland, to explore the lush, green countryside and typical French villages.
The original village of Biscarosse is located inland from the ocean, on the edge of a large fresh water lake that is ideal for swimming, and other water sports such as sailing, windsurfing and even fishing, There are several walking trails and dedicated bicycle routes, providing safe cycling for all the family. The region is still relatively unspoilt, with wooded areas and lots of wildlife. However, just a few kilometres west is the town of Biscaross-Plage, which is more of a traditional tourist resort, with hotels and restaurants and plenty of family entertainment. There is even a small amusement park with rides that holds live events during the summer months. The Museum of Traditions in the main town is worth a visit, should you be unlucky enough to have a wet day. The museum features archaeological artefacts, as well as exhibits on regional history and legends.
The small town of Mimizan, also known as the Pearl of the Cote d'Argent, further south is also on the edge of a fresh water lake, which has a pleasant walking trail around the shore as well as a number of beaches which are always popular in the summer months. Children will enjoy hiring a pedalo on the lake or the miniature putting green on dry land. A few kilometres away is the small resort of Mimizan-Plage, quieter than its northern neighbour Bicarosse, but still with some excellent seafood restaurants and plenty of stunning beaches. There are a number of musical and theatrical events during summer months for tourists, while the town's main dance festival, showcasing traditional local customs, is held each April. Mimizan's small museum tells the history of the town and the surrounding region from prehistoric times, including the traditional industries that people worked in before tourism arrived. One of the more interesting buildings in the town is the Chateau de Woolsack, a hunting lodge built in 1911 for the Duke of Westminster, and which used to be Coco Chanel's holiday home.
