This intriguing area of contrasts is located on the south coast of France in the region of Languedoc-Rousillon. Herault has something to offer any visitors, with its historic towns and villages, beautiful beaches and seaside resorts, as well as mountains and caves to explore. The main town of Montpelier has a pleasant old town with a lively main square as well as lots of good restaurants. The best selection of tourist accommodation is undoubtedly in the seaside towns that line this stretch of the coastline.
One of the most popular resorts is at the eastern end of the Herault coast. La Grande-Motte has plenty of modern hotels and apartment buildings, miles of sandy beaches with safe swimming, plenty of restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets and entertainment for children of all ages. Staying here, you are within a short drive of all the natural attractions and hilltop villages of the mountains, but within walking distance of all the amenities you need for a family holiday. Further west is the more unusual resort of Sete, perched on a strip of land between the Mediterranean and the large inland Thau lake. Known as the “Venice of Languedoc” because of all the canals and waterways between the sea and the lake, there are pleasant beaches near to the old port as well as some excellent seafood restaurants. At the western end of the Thau lake is the resort of Cap d'Agde with a long sandy beach and the only naturist sunbathing area on this part of the coast.
Inland along the Herault valley, there are several interesting natural rock formations, both above and below ground, many offering great views over the region and down to the Mediterranean. The Moureze rock formation is a collection of limestone cliffs and hills that have been eroded into unusual shapes, many even with their own names. There are hiking paths that will take you on a tour round the rock formations or even climbing over them, depending on your walking experience and ability.
East of the Moureze is the Clamouse cave, one of the many caves in this region that are always popular with tourists. This particular example features an underground river and a corridor of pure white stones. The Demoiselles cave in the north-east of Herault features an enormous underground “cathedral” with an 80 metre high roof. Even the entrance to this unusual cave is out of the ordinary, as you make your way underground via funicular railway.
