The Medoc is a coastal region in the departement of Gironde, boasting dozens of Atlantic beaches, stunning natural scenery and a number of pretty French towns and villages. Just north of the popular Bassin d'Arcachon area, the Medoc can often be quieter, making it an ideal destination for those who like to get away from the crowds on holiday. Even in the height of summer, you can take a bicycle and head inland to find a secluded spot to yourself within the forests of Medoc. There are several lakes inland too, which are a great alternative to the sea if you need to cool down in the summer months.
The coast is undoubtedly the Medoc's major attraction, including the sand dunes and beaches that are perfect for either walking or sunbathing. The dunes at Pointe de Grave at the northernmost point of Medoc provide great views up and down the Aquitaine coast. There is a small museum in the lighthouse at the Point de Grave too. The beaches in the towns can get busy during the summer, but you only need to walk a kilometre or so away from the resorts to find a quiet patch of sand. Or you could venture inland to one of the lake beaches at Lacanau or Hourtin-Carcans. Both can be reached by bicycle in about an hour from the coast. There is also a bike trail running the whole length of the coast, Point de Grave to Le Cap Ferret in the Bassin d'Arcachon, proving safe cycling for all the family.
There are more unusual ways to explore the Medoc countryside, as the region is a very popular place for horse riding, thanks to the many trails and quiet roads. Equestrian centres throughout the area arrange day trips with lunch, if you're an inexperienced rider, or you can “hire” a horse and organise your own itinerary if you know what you're doing.
As with most of the regions in this part of France, the Medoc is well known for its wine, and there are several vineyards and caves that offers tours and tastings. Many inland towns hold wine festivals during the summer and you can also find organised tours that mean even the driver can sample the local produce without needing to get back in the car afterwards! The Cordouan lighthouse is one of the oldest in the world that is still in use – built in the 16th century, it looks more like a private country home than a lighthouse, and is home to a luxurious apartment and a chapel. The lighthouse can be reached via a short boat trip from the mainland, and the view from the 60 metre structure is well worth the climb.
