Often described as one of the most beautiful ski resorts in the whole of France, the village of Megeve in the department of Haute-Savoie is situated in the heart of the Alps. Home to dozens of ski runs, to suit all abilities, a huge range of accommodation and plenty of restaurants and bars for your après ski entertainment, Megeve has been popular with the rich and famous ever since the Rothschild family started skiing here in 1910, rather than nearby St Moritz. Many of the hotels and other amenities shut in the summer, when the area becomes much quieter, but visitors at this time of year can still appreciate the stunning scenery or visit the historic buildings in the 13th century village.
The skiing area round Megeve is known as the "Domaine Évasion Montblanc", and consists of nearly 450 kilometres of ski slopes, served by over 200 lifts. There are several black runs in this part of the Alps, which should only be tackled by experienced skiers, but there are a number of nursery slopes and green runs too. In the winter, ski schools are run for children while adults will have no problem finding an instructor if they want to work on their style. As well as downhill slopes, the Évasion Montblanc is also home to several cross-country skiing trails while the town also boasts a large indoor skating rink. Unusually for many ski resorts, Megeve is also known for its golf, even in the winter, when the Snow Golf Cup is held on the Mont d'Arbois plateau.
Golf is also a popular pastime in the summer, and there are several courses in the Megeve area. There are also dozens of hiking and mountain biking trails in the area, if you prefer to head away from civilised society. Some of the winter ski lifts are open in the summer, taking tourists up to the tops of the mountains to enjoy the view or to start on one of the downhill mountain biking trails. Unlike some other ski resorts in the Alps, Megeve does get very quiet in the summer, with many restaurants and hotels closing once the snow has disappeared. Enough stay open that you have some choice where you eat and stay, but the benefit is that the trails in this area tend to be quieter than in other resorts that are marketing themselves as summer destinations.
