As the eighth largest city in France, Montpellier has all the practical amenities that any tourist needs on holiday, with plenty of accommodation options. Similarly, its proximity to the Mediterranean makes it an ideal base for exploring both the French Riviera and the natural scenery and infamous hilltop villages further inland. Home to contrasting attractions such as historical buildings, modern museums, cultural events and world-famous gardens, there is bound to be something for everyone in this town.
Montpellier has grown significantly in recent years, but its heart is still the old town around the Place de la Comedie. Not only is this where you can find many of the best restaurants or enjoy a drink in the sunshine, but it is also the location of one of Montpellier's most stunning buildings; the opulent 19th century opera house, open to the public during the day. Heading further back in time, there are several intriguing buildings in the medieval quarter of Montpellier, such as the cathedral and the 13th century Jewish mivke or bathing house – a reminder of the town's once important Jewish community.
The Fabre Museum is housed in a former Jesuit college and has over 800 works of art on display by artists from all over Europe, dating from the 16th century to the present day. Art lovers will also enjoy the town's annual film festival, held every October, and showing films with a Mediterranean theme or made by directors from the region.
Montpellier even has plenty to keep the kids amused, such as the Odysseum complex with its indoor aquarium, planetarium – including a 3D film on space – and an ice rink, as well as a selection of family-friendly restaurants. Montpellier Zoo has been popular with children for years, and the park now has a new attraction in the shape of an Amazon greenhouse, featuring many of the species, which are at risk thanks to the destruction of the rainforest.
When you've had enough of the sightseeing, head for one of Montpellier's beaches to relax and enjoy the area's pleasant climate. Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone is probably the most popular beach. Not only is it quieter than most Mediterranean beaches, but it is backed by a large nature reserve which is home to an adventure park, vineyards and the ruined Maguelone Cathedral. Parts of the building have now been restored and it hosts cultural events in what was once the main body of the church.
