The city of Nice is one of the largest resorts on the Cote d'Azur, and is also where most people flying into the region will land. With several kilometres of beaches on the Mediterranean Sea, Nice is an ideal destination for those who just want to relax in the sunshine or try out some water sports. However, what a lot of people don't realise is that Nice also has a picturesque old town on the hill, which is well worth dragging yourself away from the sands for a few hours. Make sure you check out the restaurants around the marina which serve some of the best fresh seafood in the area.

The seven kilometres of beaches along the seafront at Nice are split into public and private areas; private are “owned” by beach bars or hotels, and you will have to pay a few Euros a day to use their facilities. These include sun loungers, parasols, waiter service drinks and indoor toilets and showers. The public beaches also have toilets and showers, though, and two of them have even been fitted with handrails to make it easier for those with mobility problems to get in and out of the sea! Behind the beach is the famous Promenade des Anglais, a huge walkway that stretches almost all the way round the bay. A lot of locals come here to stretch their legs before dinner, though they usually only tackle a small stretch at a time! Later on, this area becomes quite lively with markets stalls, musicians and performers keeping you entertained late into the night.

The old town is located on the hill at one end of the bay, and is home to a wide selection of churches and interesting local buildings. Parts of the climb can be a little steep, but there is a tourist train that will take you most of the way, and the view along the coast is well worth the climb once you get up there. One of the most interesting buildings is the Russian Orthodox church, built in the 19th century, while the remains of an ancient Greek settlement can also be seen on La Colline du Chateau.

Nice is a large city to explore, but there is an organised bus tour that runs several times a day in the summer, with a commentary to point out the areas of interest. You can also hire bicycles to ride the length of the Promenade des Anglais or take a boat trip in either direction along the Cote d'Azur from the busy marina.
