Situated in the central Burgundy region, the departement of Nievre is a very rural one, with few towns and cities to get in the way of the area's stunning scenery. Whether you want to just walk by the banks of the River Loire and explore the Morevan forest or of you'd like to try something a bit more active, there are outdoor activities centres throughout the Nievre region, catering to the nature tourists that are starting to flock to this lush, green area. There are several picturesque historical towns, including the main city of Nevers, while you can always fulfil your need for speed at the Magny-Cours racing circuit.
Located on the rivers Loire and Nievre, the beautiful town of Nevers is dominated by its waterways, with many historic bridges, riverbank buildings and, of course, the opportunity to get a unique perspective on these attractions by taking a boat trip in the summer months. The Palais Ducal, a Renaissance chateau in the old town, is well worth spending a few hours visiting, to make sure you explore every room of this opulent, religious palace. Nevers' cathedral is another must-see; built between the 12th and 16th centuries, it is a real mix of architectural styles and features some spectacular sculptures.
The Morvan Forest is one of the best places for nature lovers to head. Not only is the region full of interesting natural specimens, but there are also several quaint villages nestled within the trees. Marked hiking trails will help make sure you get the best out of your visit. If you want to try some water sports, there are several lakes within the forest too, including the Lac du Settons which has its own centre where you can hire equipment. There are also several manmade beaches if you would rather just relax. Cycling is popular in Burgundy, and there is a map of cycling routes across the region available from tourist offices. If you haven't brought your bike, they can be hired from the activities centre at Les Simonets, a few kilometres outside Nevers.
Motor racing fans will know the name Magny-Cours, where the French Grand Prix was held until 2008. There are still several motor racing events held during the year, including most weekends in the summer months. You can even arrange in advance to drive the circuit yourself – the perfect treat for any Formula 1 fan! Even if you're not a huge motor racing fan, it can be a lot of fun at race weekends, as there is always other entertainment provided, such as musical performances, and plenty to keep the kids amused too.
