The region of Normandy is located in the north of France on the English Channel. It was the site of the D-Day landings during the Second World War and is home to a number of historic towns, including Bayeux where visitors can see the famous tapestry. The world-famous Mont St Michel is situated just off the coast of Normandy while there are miles of beautiful beaches and scenery along the coast.

The Mont St Michel is an island off the coast of Normandy, which has been a pilgrimage site for centuries. The narrow, cobbled streets wind higher and higher up the mount featuring historic buildings and churches on the route up to the main abbey. The 11th century church not only features great architecture but also some impressive examples of religious art. Visitors can enjoy great views as they walk along the medieval ramparts at the bottom of the mount, before returning by boat to the mainland.

The D-Day landing beaches just north of Bayeux are well worth visiting, not just to appreciate the history of the area and to see the various memorials and bunkers that remain, but also to walk along the wild and unspoilt sand dunes. The nearby town of Bayeux is a medieval town, which is famous for the tapestry that bears its name, though it was not actually made there. The embroidery is over 70 metres in length and tells the story of the conquest of England by William the Conqueror and the Battle of Hastings in 1066. There is also a memorial museum about the Battle of Normandy and D-Day, while the town itself has some excellent examples of medieval French architecture.

Stretching for 130 kilometres along the Normandy coast between the town of Le Treport and the Heve Cape, the cliff top walk provides visitors with great views of the surrounding scenery, from heights of up to 120 metres in places. If you are planning to hike the entire length of the Grande Randonee hiking path, there are numerous coastal villages that are worth stopping off at either for a meal or to stay the night. Fecamp is home to a monastery where the liqueur Benedictine is made and has a pretty working fishing harbour while Etretat is a small village perched on the cliff tops. Dieppe is one of the oldest seaside resorts in France and is another of the many ferry ports along this northern coast.
