Located in the Lower Normandy region of northern France, the departement of Orne is dominated by its impressive natural scenery. Home to two national parks, as well as forests, rivers and lakes, this is an ideal destination for those who like to get outdoors and take part in sports activities. Horse riding is immensely popular in this part of France, as the region is also home to a number of top horse breeders; though you're unlikely to get to ride any race winners at a local equestrian centre!
Hikers and cyclists are really spoiled for choice in Orne, as there are dozens of trails throughout different parts of the region, taking in different kinds of scenery and aimed at people of all ages and abilities. Starting in the east, the first major natural area you come to is the Le Perche Regional Nature Park. Home to several picturesque villages, including Noce where you can find the park's visitor centre, the area features forests, farmland, valleys and an 87-kilometre driving or cycling route via most of the region's country houses. The Belleme forest, further west, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, mainly thanks to a 300-year-old, 40-metre tall oak tree near the village of La Perriere. There are some ideal picnic spots underneath the trees and the whole area is enormously popular with mushroom pickers. They even have festivals dedicated to the humble mushroom and hold classes so beginners know which are best to pick and which are best avoided.
Mushroom pickers are also to be found in the region's other Regional Nature Park, Normandie-Maine. Amateur hikers or cyclists will like this part of the departement as the trails through this area are clearly marked, short and relatively flat, providing an ideal way for anyone to explore the Orne countryside. Within the park is the Ferte-Mace recreation centre, based around a large lake which offers a variety of water sports. On dry land, there is a kid’s playground, typical French games such as boules and a path around the lake, providing access to the beaches which are very popular in summer.
The main city of Orne is known for its lace-making, and there are still many shops within the old town selling locally produced lace products. The town's museum not only details the history of the industry, but also features some of the most spectacular pieces produced in Alencon or the neighbouring town of Argentan. The medieval centre of Alencon is worth exploring, with its historic half-timbered houses, chapels and the former palace of the Duke of Alencon, with its extensive gardens and conservatories.
