Located in the modern departement of the Dordogne, Perigord was one of the ancient provinces of France. Nowadays, the area is split into four distinct regions each named after a colour that reflects something of their characteristics. Unsurprisingly, Perigord Vert or “green Perigord” is the most rural of the four areas, with farmland, forests and river valleys lying side by side with picturesque country villages and historical buildings. Visitors who enjoy spending time outdoors will love their few days in Perigord Vert, whether they are exploring the region on foot, bicycle, horseback or even in a canoe along one of the area's many rivers.
Aside from the natural beauty throughout the region and the miles of hiking trails you can use to explore it, there are some specific natural attractions that tourists and residents alike can enjoy. The Perigord Limousin Regional Nature Park is home to lots of local flora and fauna, some intriguing prehistoric monoliths and several lakes where you can try out water sports, take a stroll on the shore
or just relax in the pleasant Dordogne sunshine. There are even several castles and historic villages within the borders of the park such as the 13th century Chateau de Rochechouart which is now home to a modern art museum and the fortress of Chalus-Chabrol where Richard the Lionheart died of an arrow wound. More walking trails and unusual historic attractions can be found within the Foret de la Double, a huge wooded area that spreads throughout the whole Perigord region. There are several small lakes within the forest, which become popular as natural open-air pools in the summer, though there are so many that you can usually find a secluded spot for some peace and quiet.
There are few large towns or cities in the Perigord Vert region, but the most picturesque are Brantome and Bourdeilles on the banks of the River Dronne. Brantome is a pleasant open town, with lots of parks, gardens and shaded walkways by the water. It is also home to a large abbey, founded in the 8th century though the current building, which is open to the public, is a few hundred years younger. Bourdeilles is home to not one castle but two, although they are part of the same complex. The older fortress was built in medieval times, while the newer Renaissance building is more luxurious and opulently decorated. Housing hundreds of artefacts from the building's history, including everyday items and priceless works of art, the castle is open to visitors all year round.
