The region known as Provence is one of the most visited in all of France. Stretching from the Italian border round to Marseilles on the coast, and inland to the foothills of the Alps, the area is full of diverse attractions, stunning scenery and interesting towns and cities. Whether you want to spend your holidays on the beach, eating great seafood, or you want to pull on your hiking boots and go exploring mountains and historic villages, then Provence will have something for you.

There is a real variety of beaches in the Provence region. From resorts with private beaches and exclusive bars like La Croisette in Cannes, to remote and unspoilt areas of sand with no amenities at all, such as those found in the Camargue and everything in between. The Camargue is a wild, marshy area with sand dunes that are ideal if you want some peace and quiet while you sunbathe. If you position yourself just right, you could imagine that there is no-one else on the beach with you. The Calanques d'En-Vau near the town of Cassis are a different landscape altogether. The calanques are actually creeks, formed by high rocky cliffs and with just small areas of sand or pebbles for bathing. Some of these creeks can be difficult to climb down to or back up from, but the local tourist office will be able to give you some advice.

Antibes and Juan-les-Pins have over 25 kilometres of beaches between them, but one of the best is the small beach near Antibes marina. Accessed through archways in the old town walls, it can often be a little quieter than the other beaches in the area because so few people know it is there! If you really want to escape the crowds, you should take a boat trip from Cannes to the Iles de Lerins. Most of those taking the boat with you will be hikers, looking to explore the walking paths that cross the island, leaving you with most of the beach to yourself.

Most people head inland from the coast to enjoy the spectacular mountain scenery and popular attractions such as the Gorges du Verdon, a long canyon topped by a twisting, narrow road that provides some jaw dropping views down into the abyss below. However, there are also some picturesque and historic towns inland, such as Grasse which is famous for its perfume manufacture. Further west, you come to the cities of Avignon and Nimes. The latter is best known for its Roman ruins, while Avignon, and its famous bridge, is always popular with tourists.
