Located on the west coast of France, in the departement of Poitou-Charentes, the large seaside resort of Royan has been popular with French families for decades, thanks to its wide choice of beaches, picturesque old town and large number of children’s attractions. On the same stretch of coast as the more famous La Rochelle, fewer crowds head to the Royan area in the height of summer, so even in the peak season you should be able to find some peace and quiet on the sands. Besides, there are several Atlantic beaches to choose from, each with their different plus points.
The main beach in Royan is called La Grande Conche and stretches south from the town centre for almost two kilometres. Backed by a small wooded area that provides shade, the sea is shallow here, both factors making the beach ideal for those with young children. Adults and older kids are catered for, however, with areas set side for water sports and plenty of snack bars and restaurants, many serving local seafood specialities. North of the town, most of the beaches are to be found in smaller, rocky coves, many of which can be quite tricky to clamber down to. Perfect if you want some peace and quiet, not so good if you have a family and lots of belongings in tow. A footpath and cycle path runs from Royan along the coast to St Palais, about ten kilometres north. Take your swimming costume on your day out and have a dip at whichever beach en route takes your fancy.
The town of Royan itself is home to some gorgeous holiday villas, built around the end of the 19th century, and an intriguing 1950s cathedral, though the biggest attraction is probably the large produce and souvenir market held in the main square twice a week. Kids will be more interested in the family attractions on the outskirts, such as the Jardins du Monde, featuring themed parks with lots of space for running around, and the nearby Palmyre Zoo. Open all year and home to over 1,000 animals, the zoo also puts on live parrot and sea lion shows in the summer months. Unlike many tourist zoos, which can look a bit shabby, the Palmyre Zoo plays an important role in conservation, and visitors will learn lots about the threats to the animals they can see as well as their living habits.
