Named after the two rivers that run through it, La Garonne and Le Tarn, Tarn-et-Garonne is situated in the south-west of France in the Midi-Pyrenees region. It was once prestigious for its contributions to the silk and wool industry but now provides tourists with excellent facilities for range of outdoor sports including sailing, fishing, hiking and climbing.
Montauban, for example, is an architect’s dream known as ‘la ville rose’ due to its pink roofs with plenty of original building work and cultural history, whereas Moissac offers the experience of the Roman vestiges. The gorges of Aveyron are a great retreat if you’re finding the weather too hot – it is an oasis of cool shade and wild natural beauty at its best.
Heading east along the Aveyron River and visitors will come across Réalville, Mirabel, Cayrac eventually Montricoux. These villages are all equally charming and beautiful, set in the sweeping hills that are typical of the region. Bruniquel is said to be especially beautiful.
Towards the west of Tarn-et-Garonne visitors can visit the Moissac for its beautiful cloistered courtyards and peaceful, tranquil ambience, and also the beautiful Auvillar, which is set amongst particularly beautiful scenery. The 14th Century Gramont Castle is well-worth visiting if you’re a history buff or even an architecture or art lover – the Renaissance wing of the castle is very pretty indeed.
