One of Greece's most attractive cities Kavala in the Macedonia region of Northern Greece is built on a hillside with a Byzantine fortress at the top overlooking the picturesque harbour. The West side of the city contains shopping centres, attractive squares and modern buildings whilst the East side of Kavala contains more traditional Greek houses with cobbled streets.
There is a large choice of white sandy beaches along the winding coast road leading from Nea Peramos into Kavala itself a distance of fifteen kilometres. There is a large selection of traditional tavernas serving fish and other Greek food as well as a good choice of bars and other restaurants.
