Kefalonia is the largest island in western Greece and a site of many archaeological findings. A visit to this place is a mix of history, sun, sand and fun activities. There are many things for a visitor to see and do here.
Start with a visit to the St.George’s Castle that was built by the Romans to protect the villagers from marauding pirates. The castle itself makes for a spectacular sight and there are many displays inside that explain about its history. From the top you are treated to a panoramic view and the island below looks beautiful in the evenings.
Off the main road from Argostoli to Sami, you find the Cyclopean Walls believed to have been made by Cyclops, the one eyed giant; these walls were made of incredibly huge stones that have been hoisted neatly together. These date back to 1500 B.C. Close to the village of Lakythra are the Mazarakata tombs, which was excavated over a hundred years ago and was the resting place of important citizens of a by-gone era.
If you enjoy the outdoors, head for a picnic at the top of Mount Atos. It is an easy climb with comfortable tracks. It is very cool and at the top you will find snow even in summer. You will also come across wild horses, buzzards and owls. On clear days it offers a great view of the island below. Take an excursion around the island tailored around every fitness level. From idyllic views of the sea, paddling, exploring sea caves, while pausing at deserted beaches to enjoy packed lunches, it is an experience you will never forget.
If you are visiting from June to August, you will find hundreds of female loggerhead turtles come ashore to nest. At night you can see the tiny baby turtles hurtling to the sea. Get a taste of a typical Greek fishing village at Assos. It is a great place to sample rural life. You will find some excellent examples of Venetian architecture along the crescent shaped harbour that surrounds the village.
Head to the beach to enjoy the turquoise waters and have a go at paddling or snorkelling, while colourful fish nibble at your toes. Myrtos Bay is a tranquil stretch that is also the most photographed beach in Greece. Round it off with an evening stroll or a Volta as it is popularly known, along the King George II Avenue while chatting up the locals.
